Halcyon by Halcyon83 Halcyon by Halcyon83
The Legend of the Halcyon:

The Halcyon is a fictitious seabird with webbed feet and a saw bill. The halcyon produces its young on the shore, depositing its eggs in the sand, around midwinter. It chooses as the time to hatch its young, the period when the sea is at its highest and the waves break more fiercely than usual on the shore; with the result that the grace with which this bird is endowed shines forth even more, with the dignity of an unexpected calm. For it is a fact, that once the halcyon's eggs have been laid, the raging sea suddenly becomes gentle, all the stormy winds subside, the strong breezes lighten, and as the wind drops, the sea lies calm, until the halcyon hatches its eggs.

The eggs take seven days to hatch, at the end of which the halcyon takes a further seven days to feed its chicks until they begin to grow into young birds. Such a short growing time is nothing to marvel at, since the completion of the hatching process takes so few days. This little bird is endowed by God with such grace that sailors know with confidence that these fourteen days will be days of fine weather and call them 'the halcyon days', in which there will be no period of stormy weather.

Is this Apophysis!? :o

If so, excellent work, I've only seen a couple in this style, but it looks good. This fractal is one of those that is just waiting for someone to put it on a wall.

Awesome shapes, movement, and coloring here. It felt more like an abstract image than a fractal rendering, and that's rare for me.

I really like how it makes me think of nature and the open oceans with your color choices.

after looking at the image for several days now, i don't seem to like it that much as before. can't say why, but I'm doubting moving it to scraps or deleting it.

thanks for your kind comment anyway :)

Hmm. I say leave it. It's still very pretty and interesting. Maybe all it needs is just some more negative space, or a color touchup or something?

don't know really. initially i liked the shape, which i don't anymore (at all) at the moment. also the white, bright spot spoils the image and especially its gradient.
i think i submitted the image too quick while normally i let renders rest on my computer for a few days so when i'm about to post them, i'm sure i like them myself.

Hmm.

Most of my stuff is quicker, more instinctive. Intellectually some corner of me may not like it, but artistically and in the sense of "omg render this" I just go bang-bang-bang. No time to secondguess what may actually be good.

I think you are second-guessing yourself. Look at the comments of people here. It's got its good qualities. It's got a sort of simplicity which I think works very well for it. It doesn't *need* anything extra, and I think you may find that if you added more or did more to it, it may lose what it's got going for it already.

you're probably right. but in the end, you create "art" for yourself, or am I wrong? at least that's what people say :). and since i don't like this piece too much, it's going to be moved to scraps the first time I'll clean out my gallery. that way the image doesn't bother me anymore and the people who like it can still add it to their favs. sounds like a good idea?

Sounds good. :D Do what you feel is best.

Have you thought of taking the parameters of that one and doing something completely different with the next fractal using those? Like final transform edits, or completely reshaping it? I've seen some fractalists do this, and they end up making pretty nice series using the same fractal done different ways. :D

i'm on another computer right now, but if i remember correctly, i already used the final transform to work this one out, but if i'm home again, i might try a restyle :D
